The Minnesota Kite Society received a request for fliers to attend a kite fly near Stillwater, MN this upcoming weekend. This is not an MKS sponsored event. Here is the information about the fly if you would like to check it out.
The club I coordinate in Stillwater, MN is call the North Hill Club. We have hosted a Kite Fest for our members the last 3 years but have never had any luck with wind. We are trying to make things more exciting this year. I am hoping some of your members can come fly kites with us. This is a free event for anyone that shows up. We supply the kites. Kite Fest is this Sunday, April 29 at 3:00PM. We are meeting at Brown’s Creek Park (map) which is on Neal Ave. N. close to where it intersects with McKusick road. We received the following email today. WHAT: Kites over Grinnell scheduled for May 12 & 13, 2012 is now CANCELLED. WHY: The scheduling of soccer, indoor volleyball & Little League tournaments during the same dates prevents the use of needed field area and parking space. This situation also negates the possibility of AKA insurance coverage. WHEN: A future date for KOG has not been set. MKS Annual Meeting and Auction

DescriptionThe annual business meeting includes the approval of a slate of officers for the 2012-2013 board year, a dinner, awards and recognition for volunteering, and silent and verbal auctions where people can bid on a variety of kite related and other nice items. You MUST be a Minnesota Kite Society member to attend. There is parking available in back of the restaurant or on the street.

End silent auction, have the main auction, more socializing. Times are estimated. The Annual meeting/banquet and auction is fast approaching. We have received some commitments for auction items and pictures will be posted soon and updated as items come in.

 Size: 5ft wingspan, 3ft head-2-tail  This is the MKS Fled Workshop donation. The fabric was donated by Ken Runke. The participants in the workshop shared the cost of the kite kit (sticks, notions, etc) and picked out colors based on the MKS logo. Barb Meyer sewed the kite.
 Ken Runke has donated a great Roller kite and a Mystery Item! The roller is a Premier Swabian Roller by the Hespeler brothers. Retail for this kite is $180. This fast climber is great in light winds. Made entirely with wrapped carbon, this Roller is easy to fly and soars at high angles. 78x89.5in. (5-15 mph) Ripstop Nylon. Wrapped Carbon frame. 150lb. Test recommended. Ken is also going to bring a Mystery Item. Ken's mystery items's are usually something really good. Thanks Ken! This Shark kite, Sutton Flowform #16, Dragon Kite and Trilby 3-Stack were donated by Dennis Yeager. The Sutton is a "real" one made by Air Affair. The Dragon Kite was handmade by White Bird Kites.

11th Annual Color The Wind Kite Festival WhenSat, February 18, 11am – 4pm

DescriptionThe 11th annual "Color the Wind" Kite Festival will feature an exciting variety of huge show kites, ground displays and choregraphed kite ballet demonstrations. Kites will be available for sale in the shelter across the street from the lake: Food and refreshments will be available. Weather permitting, the festival will start at 11 a.m. on the snow and ice of Clear Lake. FFI and weather updates, see www.colorthewind.org as the date approaches.
Here is a link to the weather forecast in Clear Lake, IA Update from the color the wind website, February 11, 2012: The show will go on! We have a safe covering of ice on the lake--about 12". Depending on the wind, the festivities will start at about 11am on Saturday, February 18th and will continue until about 4 pm. We have both Fire and Ice and 180Go ready to perform their kite ballets, great big kites, handmade kites and the snowflake kites like those from the Starbucks commercial. We may even do "The Chicken Dance"!
Be sure to visit the Lakeview Room across the street from the flying field to warm up, view the display of kite memorabilia, buy your own kite, get a cookie or bag of caramel corn from the "Relay for Life" folks or just warm up!
Don't forget that The Backyard Deli will be on site with their lunch wagon.....bratwurst, burgers, chili, etc.

The Hudson Hot Air Affair is the city of Hudson's winter festival featuring a weekend of hot air balloons and so much more. On Saturday afternoon, Minnesota Kite Society members will fly kites from noon to 3 p.m. and will have kites for sale. Other indoor and outdoor activities that will occur at the school include a crafts sale, smoosh boarding (outside) and either hot air ballooning or a Field of Fire, depending on weather conditions.

Good Afternoon Fellow Kite Festival Members, It is with great sadness, our 11th Annual Lake Harriet Kite Festival has cancelled. Based on reports fromMinneapolis Park and Recreation Board Maintenance Department and the DNR, Lake Harriet is not safe to have an event on the ice. As of yesterday afternoon, there was open water on the lake which causes a lot of water movement underneath that would comprise the ice. Also, there is 7 inches of ice near the refectory and bandstand about 100 yards from the shore line (which we need 12 solid inches of ice) to be safe and with upcoming warmer daytime temperatures next week, Minneapolis Park Board along withDNR, has decided to cancel Kite Fest for 2012. We have put sign up on the bandstand letting the public know of the cancellation and if anyone has any questions, please let me know. I would like to thank everyone for lending a helping hand in planning such a wonderful event and I look forward to working with each of you again. The weather forecast for New Years Day is looking bad for kite flying. Good chance of some snow or freezing rain. Also the winds are supposed to be 25 + with gusts up to 50 mph. The fly in Lakeville, MN, January 1, 2012 is cancelled because of weather. We wish everyone a very happy New Year and hope to have better conditions for Jan 1, 2013. |
Many times people seem surprised that we have kite events in the winter. Winter is a great time to fly kites. The people of Minnesota are hardy folks that like all kinds of outdoor activities. We have a couple of favorite events coming up in January! Please check our event calendar for the latest schedule of events. On January 1st is Mr. Kite's Annual New Years Day Kite Fly. It's in Lakeville, MN from 11am - 3pm at North Park. This is a good park with lots of room to fly kites and a park shelter where you can come in from the cold for lunch and fellowship. So bring a kite to fly and food to share. You will have a GOOD time! map The 11th Annual Lake Harriet Kite Festival is on January 14th from noon - 4pm at the Lake Harriet Bandshell in Minneapolis, MN. map Alternate date: January 21st if weather conditions cancel the event on January 14th.  Thank you for your response! We will be having our workshop on December 3rd. We currently have 6 people which should give us a full room. We'll take pictures and hope to have more of these kinds of events in the future. If you would like to make a kite with us please complete the following information. Tell us what day(s) work for you and how to get in contact with you. We do not have an instructor, it will be rookie kitemakers getting together to have some fun. Experienced kitemakers are welcome too! If you have another project you are working on and would like to join us that's cool too. Participants will need their own sewing machine. Dean is going to make patterns for the Fled we can use to cut our fabric. We are looking at 3 dates, Nov 25th, Nov 26th, or Dec 3rd. Sorry about the short notice. We're hoping that in the future we can plan out more MKS workshops. Location is in the Twin Cities, most likely in Crystal, MN. If you would like us to order a Fled Kite Kit from kitebuilder for you please let us know asap. Kite builder sells them for $50 + S/H. If we combine orders we can reduce shipping cost. You can order directly or supply your own sticks, etc. The kit contains everything to complete the kite except fabric.  Bob died a week ago, but his memorial service is tomorrow, Friday, October 14th at 1:00 p.m. at the Washburn-McReavy Edina Chapel at West 50th St. and Hwy. 100. The full announcement is in the Star Tribune today.

Just wanted to let you know that pictures from One Sky One World have been posted. Check them out on the Past Events/Photos page! There was a couple there whose kite flew away into the yard of a blue house nearby. The owner of the house found a set of keys in their yard after you retrieved your kite. If you can contact MKS at flywithus@mnkites.org with how to contact you we can give you the contact info to get your keys. Please note MKS web admin cannot check personal email from his day job so I may not get back to you until evening. |

One Sky One World Kite Fly.

Description: One Sky One World (OSOW, also known as "World Kite Day") is the international day of kite flying where people all over the world fly kites annually on the second Sunday of October to promote world peace, friendship among all people, and awareness of environmental concerns. Minnesota Kite Society (MKS) is one of many organizations that will be observing OSOW with a kite fly.
We will be flying in the open field next to the Twin Cities Harvest Festival and Corn Maze this year. The kite flying is free, to enter the Maze will require purchase of a ticket to the Maze. A few weeks ago MKS was contacted by a reporter from the Minneapolis StarTribune asking about kites. He was working on a story about kiting as a hobby. A few MKS members met with the reporter and flew some kites. They took pictures and video and talked with the reporter about kites. Minneapolis, MN – On Saturday, August 20, 2011, the Minnesota Kite Society requests help from the public to fill the sky over Bloomington, MN with colors and fun shapes at their annual Flying Colors Kite Festival. The event is free and everyone is invited to bring their kites and fly with us. The festival is from 11am – 4pm, Saturday, August 20, 2011 on the Valley View Middle School play fields located on 90th Street between Portland Ave. S. and 3rd Ave. S. in Bloomington, MN. The event activities include a kite making workshop for the kids, kite competitions for kids and adults, stunt kite demonstrations, giant show kites and open flying for the public. Guest kite fliers from Minnesota, Wisconsin and Iowa will be helping to put on a great show. Larry Day and Mark Brandt from Clear Lake, Iowa will be bringing their large show kites. Coming from Wisconsin will be Ed Grys, American Kitefliers Association Regional Director, and Paul Fieber with their gliders and kites. Mr. Kite, Craig Christensen from Lakeville, MN will be there with his spectacular kite creations. Back from last year will be the kid's events like the glider drop where small gliders are dropped from a large kite and kids scramble to claim a glider to keep. Kids that find specially marked gliders win prizes. Kids can also color and make their own kite to keep and fly.
